Cracking the Code



Dick Gay is a former NSA operations officer and CIA overseas operative in the Clandestine Service. He is a member of the NSA Phoenix Society, Vice President of the New England chapter of CIRA (CIA Retirees Assn), and Special Assistant to the President of AFIO (the national Assn For Intel Officers). He speaks a number of European and Asian languages, and since returning to Maine he has been an instructor in Spanish at the College of the Atlantic (COA), and in Russian at the Maine Maritime Academy (MMA); and directed a USAID international program at Husson College. He is a Maine Mentor volunteer for international studies and foreign language majors for UMaine, Orono. He has 500 hours volunteer at Acadia Hospital, Bangor where his wife Mardi Byers-Gay used to work. He is a solo pilot and member of Bar Harbor CAP Squadron, and runs a B&B in Blue Hill ( In 2003 he co-authored They Came to Destroy America, a pictorial history on Nazi agents landed by U-boat in Florida, New York, and Maine; he writes articles for intel association newsletters (CIA, NSA, AFIO, etc), and recently contributed three articles to the new 2-vol. illustrated Encyclopedia of Intelligence and Counterintelligence (M.E.Sharp, Jan.2005).
